the final product!

this is the final poduct of "the secrets of mr myles

evaluation question 7

looking back at the preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt i the progression from it to the full product.?

in the preliminary we had a very limited knowledge of using the cameras and on any camera angles, shots and lighting issues. compared to in the full product we had a large knowledge of camera shots, angles etc. also in the preliminary we had hardly any knowledge of using the editing tools. in the full product we had fun learning and improving on this knowledge. in the preliminary shooting we only shot it once and left it. where as in the full product we filmed each shot a few times over. this would insure that some continuity errors didn't happen although unfortunatly some did, so more shooting was needed. we also learned that from different angles the lighting changesso you have to try to find an angle with similar lighing otherwise you have a continuity error. from the preliminary, it taught us that even the basic rules need to be kept otherwise it confuses the audiences and makes the film opening to be very un interesting.

as a conclution, i feel i have learnt alot through the process of creating a final product. From shooting to editing, i will continue to learn and use this as past experience.

evaluation question 6

what have you learnt about the technologies from the process of constructing this product?

this is the camera i borrowed off a family member as i believe the filming to be better than the school cameras we were provided with. it is the panasonic SDR-S70. this has 78x zoom which allowed us to do any zooming if we needed. the best feature is that the camera has a small screen on it. this allows you to review what you already have filmed and allows you to see whethere anything needs changing . you can watch things back and delete them if needed. this camera also has a good feature of taking photos. this was fun to play around with.
what i have learnt about this camera is that you need to always know how to use it first as it does get complicated. i also learnt that on pars of the camera you can edit it if you have any problems with lighting.

The software we used was premiere pro. this is a very detailed editing software. it allows you to place clips and music together, remove background noise and a lot more just to the clips. the software allows you to add titles, effects and transitions to any clips. as i have previously used this software in other subjects, i had a good understanding of it. however i still learnt new things about this. i learnt about overlapping thetitles and clips, adding music and how to unlink background noise from the clips.

i used blogger, witer and youtube to create my film opening. i used blogger for some inspiration and help with my research, i used youtube for more inspirational clips on my work and i used twitter for some market research on what type of films people watch.

evaluation question 5

How did you attract/ address your audience?

our audience was aimed at teens around the age of 16-17. The reason for this is because our group was around this age so we wanted to do something along those lines. as we were surrounded by 16-17 year olds we knew what type of things they would like.

we attracted our audience with the help of the genre its self. the genre is popular amoungst most teens. they like the thrill aswell as the mystery. we got some inspiration by a popular film box set, so this would have helped as they would have known that the film would have got brilliant ideas from this.

the way we addressed our audience was through our twitter page. This page allowed for the group to ask questions to our fans and allow us to update them on what we have done so far.

we also showed a rough cut to our class to see what they thought. the feedback we used to see what needed to improve. the only problem with our original feedback was they thought it was more like a music video so we had to change it to try to make it a film opening.

evaluation question 4

who would be the audience for your media product?

Evaluation Question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

whilst researching in companies that might want to distribute our film I came across entertainment film distributors. These are the leading independent distributors in the UK. this company distribute the small independent films with a small budget, that is why these might want to distribute my film.

because our film has no known actors and it is a low budget film, I believe that entertainment films will distribute our film. the problem with small movie producers is that the big names like twentieth century fox are not interested in distributing these films because people in these films are not well know. it doesn't matter about the film or story line if it doesn't appeal to them they will not distribute them. this is all based on popularity of the characters and how well they believe the films will be.

Entertainment film distributors don't specialise in a genre. they have released a mix of films from saw to the lord of the rings trilogy. This is why they would be good to distribute our film. if any sequels were made, these would be a great distributor as they have already done plenty of sequels.

Evaluation Question 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The Villain in our film opening (played by Bethany Jackson), kidnaps the victim "Aimee" (played by Aimee Griffin). Aimee is tortured by the villain in many despicable ways. The character that Aimee plays is compared to Adam Faulkner-Stanheight who is kidnapped in "SAW"

Aimee Griffin: Aimee plays a victim that has been kidnapped out of the street. She is tortured by a villain in ways that are unbelievable. she wears normal clothing that she would wear when going out. She is kidnapped in daylight and ends up in a game board where she makes the moves that defines her fate.

Adam Faulkner-Stanheight: Adam plays a character that is kidnapped by Jigsaw and no one knows how. he is tortured by jigsaw with the threat of his wife and daughter being killed. He ends up in a dirty run down bathroom.

Evaluation Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
our media product has the conventions of a detective film. when we were thinking of our genre we had to create a suspicious opening to grab people's attentions before the film even started.as we were aiming it at the young adults (16-20 years) we had to base it around a character around that age. we used quite a lot of different camera angles and shots. in the beginning of the movie, we used a bit of match on action with her feet. instead of seeing the whole body moving, we made sure we focused on her feet.this gave you suspicion of who this mystery character was.then as the movie continued we decided to allow the viewers to watch what we saw. that way it created the feeling of a bystander. as we were meeting the character that is Mr Myles, we decided that the first shot of our mystery man should be an over the shoulder shot. this creates more mystery to the whole film as people would like to find out who this mystery man is and what he is doing. then we went back to the bystander watching all this happen.

the variety of camera shots show all the different settings that we are using. this is good because it allows people to see what is going on in the background and get a feel for what is happening in the movie. setting the scene is important because if the viewers are not sure of where it is set they could get confused and turn the film off. Our film opening is set in a nice residential area and in "Aimee's " house. we chose these settings as we thought this would give us a good backdrop for the opening.

unfortunately lighting was a problem. Because of the season it got dark quickly and we had to film before and after the Christmas holiday. we were filming straight after school so we would get the last of the daylight, this became a problem because we would have some parts slightly darker than others. Really we wanted it to be around  dark but as it was getting darker later that would mean working at 5-6 pm when people couldn't work on the film at that time.  unfortunately after a curtain date we couldn't film so some parts had to stay with slight darkness.

on our titles the writing is red to try to get the feel of the detective genre. the reason behind this was because when the writing is red people tend to group it with blood. we helped to fit it in to the titles by making the writing look like blood. people would be attracted to this because they would wonder why the titles were set out like the way they are.

research into titles: coraline

"coraline" is a film around a child who lives in two different worlds. The film is more of a cartoon than anything else. The titles are all based on the second world, where the characters have buttons for eyes.

research into titles: Zombieland

"Zombieland" is a film about the world being taken over by zombies. The film opens part of the film then the titles. the titles are unique because they are all in slow motion and have the writing moving as if what they have filmed e.g. the bullet hitting the writing is real.
the link to the opening is:

9 Frames of our titles

These are the frames from our film "The Secrets Of Mr Myles". these 9 frames contain how we have decided to set out our titles. using the idea of the 9 titles from my previous post "cloudy with a chance of meatballs", we created one of our own like it.

scripting

Our new video contained no dialogue. This meant we didn't need a script. this was very helpful to time that we had.

complete change

over the past 2-3 months I haven't really blogged but in that time me and Sabrina have been really busy. we had a complete change of idea again, we came across some complications with our idea for "those five boys". Our film turned out to be more like a music video. we decided to keep a lot of what we had already filmed and we just filmed a little part just for  our new idea.
Change in idea
our new idea was we were going to keep our first name "The secrets of Mr Myles" but change the idea completely. we kept the name, the font (chiller) and we also kept the original music we chose. what we did was changed the idea from a scrapbook to someone being kidnapped when she is going out to meet some friends. Our actor, Aimee Griffin, was kept as part of our film and we added in our other actor, Bethany Jackson, as the kidnapper. we never changed the name of our actors into a character just to give it a slight feel of reality.
Aimee would be getting ready to go out with her friends and she would leave her house alone. as she is walking to meet her friend she gets kidnapped just outside her house.
Settings
The settings for our film was inside of a house and outside the house. to keep it all the same we used my house as the setting, both outside and inside. we had to make sure that the weather was the same, everything in the house was the same and that it was filmed at the same time every night we filmed. this did prove a difficulty as when we were filming it the transition between seasons has an affect on the daylight hours, and when we first started filming it was darker than when it was when we finished filming the film.
Music
As I mentioned, we kept our original music. the beauty of keeping this music is that we do not have to send of a request to use the music. the reason for this is because the musician who created it put a note on his YouTube page that we did not need to request permission. the piece of music we are using is Paramore decode instrumental played by Alexanderx22.
Costume
The costumes we are using is as followed.
For Aimee:

  • A "The Wanted" t-shirt that is brown with the boys faces on.
  • Jeggins
  • Boots
  • A small back jacket with gold buttons
For Bethany:

  • A black pair of fingerless gloves
  • A black pair of trousers
  • A black hooded coat
  • Black shoes
we chose these costumes as Aimee's costume is a basic normal teenagers outfit that they would go out in. Many Teens prefer to go out in clothing that is fashionable to there preference and that is comfortable. We decided to give Bethany a long black Hooded coat to hide her face and make her look like the stereotypical youth that many people would be scared of. the fingerless gloves and the whole black look makes her look like she is not someone to mess with.

change in plan

Over The christmas holiday, i began thinking that our original idea would have been too complicated. i began to think of a new idea and we finally got a new idea.

Our New Idea (Those five boys)
our new idea is about a girl called aimee who is very obsessive over The Wanted. The girl would begin her morning by bringing up youtube and typing in "the wanted for the first time" the musci will start playing. she will get up, showered, brushing her teeth and getting back on her laptop. she will open another tab,and go onto twitter, she will look through the latest tweets and then go onto the discover button. she will look for the wanted and click on to the wanted. she would then be shouted by her mother and run down to go school. she will stop the music and get in the car and turn the radio on, by coincidence the same song will be on and through out the journey she will be listening whilst looking out the window day dreaming. when she gets out the car, the music will stop and she will meet her friends and they start to debate about The Wanted. the bell will ring and they will be broken off and walk to their lessons. Through out all of this the crew roles would run, and when the bell rings and they are walking away the title would role down.

If we continued the film it would be about a student and she would meet the wanted, she would prove her friends wrong. they all believe she wouldn't stand a chance with a celebrity and they believe that The Wanted are horrible people. Aimee would end up getting in a relationship with Nathan Sykes and proves that not all celebrities are horrible people.
